Thrifty Thrift Store Tips, While Losing Weight on the HCG Diet

If you’re an HCG Dieter you know that you could be dropping a whole size in a day or a week.  So, I am absolutely not kidding about the rapid weight loss or the fact that the real cost of this diet is keeping yourself clothed as you drop the weight.  There’s a point when you have to make new holes in your old belts and your old clothes hang on your quickly shrinking body like an old sack.  Well, if you work and you have to keep buying $100.00 suits or if the budget is just too tight to go running off to the mall every week or two and dropping a couple of C-notes so that you can look remotely presentable then I have a few thrifty thrift store tips to help your budget keep up with your new body.

One of your most economical options when dropping weight like mad on the HCG Diet is to shop thrift stores.  You can get quality jeans, blouses, trousers, and work suits for as little as $5.00.

Always choose quality.  No sense looking shoddy and I would never recommend that.  Just for perspective, I have found a $1500.00 couture dress in a thrift shop as well as a $1200.00 painting and numerous high quality antiques.  Half the clothes in my closet are from thrift stores and it’s kind of like a hobby.  Not to mention that they often have a great selection of plus sizes for when you are between a 16 and a 12.  Nice dress suits, dresses, and more.  It goes without saying to wash or dry clean the clothes first and keep personal items…. well, personal.

Shop Discount stores like Target and Walmart.  More expensive than a thrift store but the clothes are brand new and there are often some serious bargains.  Unfortunately, plus sizes are generally more expensive than smaller sizes so keep that in mind if you still have a lot of weight to lose.  Discount stores generally have smaller selections than other clothing stores but there are some deals to be had.

Clearance stores can be a great resource.  Some examples of these are  the Nordstrom’s Rack, TJ Maxx, Marshalls and many more depending on what part of the country you are in.  Clothes are new and often discounted 20-60%.  Great if you have to maintain a smart, professional  image such as in a work situation.

Online shopping  I’ve personally never been comfortable with buying clothes online.  I promise you that you will have absolutely no perspective as to what size you will be on the HCG Diet week to week.  An example of this is the first shopping trip I made after going from a size 16 to a size 6.  I took all these clothes in “my size” to the dressing room and they were all TOO BIG!  I mean really, my head hadn’t caught up to my new tiny size.  I was supposed to be shopping in size 6!  So, I don’t really recommend this but you can certainly find some deals online so it’s worth mentioning.

In general, save the big bucks shopping spree for when you reach your goal weight.  THEN, you can go all out.  Looking good and feeling great are part of the process of losing weight.  It’s an emotional moment when you reach that final weight loss goal and you want to feel beautiful and show it off.  But… hint hint… the HCG diet works so fast that I don’t want you to invest a fortune in clothes in the meantime.  I hope you find some beautiful and fashionable treasures.  Enjoy these thrift store tips and  Happy Shopping!

I have a situation and I’m wondering if you would have any suggestions for me. I will be a bridesmaid in a wedding in December. The dress could take up to 8 weeks to be delivered. I am starting my last 40 day round in a week and know I will lose at least another 30+ lbs. The dress is strapless and floor length (if that helps). Realizing I’ll need some alterations but hoping the cost won’t exceed that of the gown itself I’m wondering if I should order the size I shrink to 1/2 way through the 40 days. What would you do? This is one wedding that I don’t want to miss out on being a part of.
Thank you for any help Tammy … 😉

Hi Shirl and thanks for writing! Congratulations on your wonderful weight loss!!! You’re doing great!

My recommendation would be to order a dress a couple sizes smaller than you currently are but is still somewhat comfortable as it’s much worse to buy an expensive dress and not have it fit. All dresses can be taken in but many cannot be let out. Having the dress taken in — isn’t that a great problem to have!!??
